101 things to do this summer

Company: SW Lakes Trust

I self-initiated project: I created  101 Things to Do This Summer while working at South West Lakes Trust, a charity that cares for around 40 inland waters across the South West and welcomes millions of visitors each year. The project was about more than a booklet - it was a way to deepen people’s connection with the lakes, to help families explore, learn and enjoy the outdoors in accessible, playful ways.

The idea
There was a simple insight behind this project: if you want people to value special places, give them reasons to experience them. That’s how 101 Things to Do This Summer was born - an activity guide designed to encourage visitors (especially families) to explore multiple sites, try new activities and make meaningful connections with the landscape around them.

What I did
From concept through design and delivery, I led this project end-to-end:

  • Developed the overall concept and structure of the activity booklet

  • Designed visuals and layouts for both print and digital formats

  • Created content that offered variety, accessibility and fun for a wide range of users

  • Ensured the booklet could be used easily on-site or at home

The result was a resource that didn’t just inform - it engaged. Families used it to discover activities across lakes, helping to spread visitor interest more evenly and support awareness of local environments.

Continued life and impact

Since its launch in 2016, 101 Things to Do This Summer has continued to be used and enjoyed at South West Lakes Trust sites. Its longevity is a testament to the strength of its concept - engaging people in ways that are practical, joyful and memorable. This project sits alongside other community and behaviour-led work I’ve created - all rooted in the idea that meaningful engagement drives impact. Whether it’s encouraging exploration, behaviour change, or deeper connection to place, thoughtful creative design makes work come alive.

Year: 2016 - this booklet is still used today (2022). I worked on this project whilst employed at SW Lakes Trust, the intellectual property belongs to SW Lakes Trust.
