Value for water
Company: South West Water
The idea
Water isn’t just a utility - it’s the foundation of life, the environment and the communities we care about. With growing demand on supplies and climate change affecting how water is sourced and used, helping people - especially future generations - truly value water became a long‑term strategic focus for South West Water.
What I did
I created and delivered the Value for Water programme - a multi‑year initiative designed to educate, inspire and empower young people and communities about the importance of water and the role we all play in conserving it. At its heart was a new, first‑of‑its‑kind educational visitor experience, supported by school outreach and tailored learning activities.
Key elements included:
-
A strategic awareness programme rooted in long‑term behaviour change and environmental stewardship.
-
The development and launch of South West Water’s first Value for Water visitor centre, in partnership with South West Lakes Trust, offering interactive experiences to teach children (and their grown‑ups) why water matters and how to protect it.
-
Recruitment of an educational officer to design and deliver a curriculum‑aligned programme, bringing water education into primary schools across the South West.
-
Collaborative project‑management with a local agency, ensuring the visitor centre and supporting resources were engaging, informative and grounded in real‑world water science and sustainability.
The impact
The Value for Water programme created a new platform for water education across the region - giving children hands‑on experiences, connecting them with the natural world that depends on water, and helping shape a generation that understands why water is precious and worth protecting.
Year: 2021. I worked on this project whilst employed at Pennon Group Plc, the parent company of South West Water, the intellectual property of this project belongs to Pennon Group Plc. South West Lakes Trust also own the intellectual property for the visitor centre project.
